Qiviuk is the Inuvialiut word for down, the inner, insulating blanket of the Canadian Arctic Muskox, the softest, warmest and most luxurious fibre in the world. This amazing coat allowed the Muskox to survive the last ice age as it roamed the earth along with the wooly mammoth. Jacques Cartier Clothier and the Inuvialuit of the Canadian High Arctic have formed a unique and successful alliance to produce and manufacture Qiviuk with social and environmental sensitivity. |

This blend of qiviut, merino wool and silk still maintains much of the amazing properties of 100% qiviut. Qiviut is the muskox’s downy undercoat. The down fiber is harvested by hand once a year in the spring. Since an adult muskox only sheds between four to six pounds of fiber per year, qiviut is quite rare. The yarn is incredibly soft and lightweight. As fine if not finer than cashmere, qiviut is eight times warmer than wool. But the fiber is also very durable. The addition of the silk adds sheen to the dyed colors. Given its rarity, softness and warmth, qiviut is mostly used to knit accessories such as hats, scarves, mittens and gloves.
